The Miao minority has a unique tea tradition, with Million Flower Tea serving as both a symbol of hospitality and a medium for expressing love. This special tea is made by cutting mature winter gourd and fresh grapefruit peel into delicate, finger-sized pieces, intricately carved with auspicious designs of insects, fish, birds, and flowers. In Miao culture, magpies symbolize good fortune and are believed to bring joyful news, while ladybugs represent luck, inspiring these artistic carvings.
A notable custom tied to Million Flower Tea is its role in courtship. When a young man proposes, the girl’s response is subtly conveyed through the tea: four pieces signify acceptance, while three mean rejection, allowing the suitor to understand her feelings without words.
